Welcome to the Mountain State Wheelers Bicycle Club

Serving the Cycling Community in the Charleston, West Virginia Area for 31 Years

Spokes for Folks

The Mountain State Wheelers Bicycle Club is working with St. Johns Episcopal Church and their “Spokes for Folks” program to provide bicycles to underserved citizens of the valley.

In the spring of 2006 the Charleston Police Department donated 25 bikes to the club. The club in turn donated them to the church. The club also helped pickup 30 more bikes that were donated from various residents. Half of these bikes were reconditioned by the Charleston Bicycle Center. Club members spruced up the others during afternoon maintenance sessions. So far in 2006 45 bikes have been given to worthy applicants through a lottery process set up by St Johns.

2006 was the second year for this give-a-way program. It was the first year for the club’s involvement. More spacious and secure facilities have been obtained and plans are to continue this program into the future.

You can donate used bikes or parts to this program by contacting St John’s church. A monetary contribution is welcome also. Extra spending money is always needed for tubes and tires and such.

All proceeds are tax deductible through the “Spokes for Folks” program.

A gracious thanks to the Charleston Police Department for donating these bikes and Bill Nottingham at Charleston Bicycle Center for donating time for fixing them.

A big thanks to St John’s for starting “Spokes for Folks” to put these unused bikes to good use for others who may not be able to enjoy the wonderful feeling of gliding along on two wheels any other way.

Contact St John’s Episcopal Church for more information.
